Apple Cider Vinegar

Some of us may see Apple cider vinegar as a natural cleaning product that households can use as disinfectants. After all, it contains antibacterial properties like vitamin C which helps in reducing inflammation. Among its many uses in the household, it can also be used as a natural cleaning agent for teeth whitening.

Apple cider vinegar is derived from the fermented juice of crushed apples. It’s main ingredient is Acetic acid (CH3COOH) and as mentioned, it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, it is the¬† antibacterial property of apple cider vinegar that is useful for the cleaning and whitening of the mouth and teeth.

In addition, there was a study conducted to determine the effects of bleaching agents on the colour and hard tissues of the tooth. The result found that the three bleaching agents used, (White vinegar, apple vinegar and hydrogen peroxide) all had bleaching effects on the tooth, but using excessive white vinegar may cause damage to the hardness and surface configuration of teeth.

Application:

To use it as a mouthwash, dilute it with water. Use 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of water and gargle the solution for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with water and continue your daily brushing routines. Do it anywhere from 1-3 times a week, gradually increasing the frequency. You can get raw organic apple cider vinegar which is 32 Ounces or you can get the 128 Ounces option if you want to save on cost and buy in bulk.

I would recommend buying 32 Ounces and trying it out first to see if you like the results.

Precaution:

Take note that excessive use of vinegar (everyday) or using it for too long a duration ( more than 3 minutes) may cause damage and erode teeth enamel. Remember to dilute the vinegar solution and use sparingly.

The whitening process will take time.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another common secret ingredient that households use to eliminate odour and clean away surface stains. It also contains sodium bicarbonate, an ingredient which is found in many teeth whitening toothpastes today.

Therefore, baking soda is considered a mild abrasive that is able to clean away surface stains on your teeth.

A laboratory study investigated the whitening effects of brushing teeth with standard toothpaste against brushing teeth with toothpastes containing baking soda. The result showed toothpastes containing high concentrations of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) were more effective at removing the yellow intrinsic tooth stains compared to regular toothpastes.

Application:

Use baking soda and mix it in water in a ratio of 1 teaspoon baking soda to 2 teaspoons of water to form a paste. Brush your teeth with the paste in addition to your regular toothpaste and rinse well afterwards. Repeat the routine 2-3 times a week. You should see a noticeable difference in 2-3 weeks.

Precaution:

Excessive use could again also cause damage to the enamel of the teeth. Do not only apply the baking soda paste to brush your teeth as the absence of fluoride in the paste does not help towards the strengthening of the teeth and the prevention of possible dental cavities.

Remember to brush with your regular toothpaste.

If you have metal braces on, please consult your dentist before using baking soda to whiten your teeth.

Fruits

Chewing on crunchy raw fruits like apples can help remove eliminate food and bacteria in your mouth by removing surface stains. Strawberries are also a popular option, containing vitamin C that helps in plague removal. Fruits that contain malic acid alleviates the discolouration of teeth to them a brighter look.

Many people have also popularized self concocted solutions fruits combined with baking soda to whiten their teeth. Eg. Lemon with Baking Soda, Strawberries and Baking Soda etc.

Application:

Chew on apples daily.

Mix a tiny amount of baking soda with some fresh lemon juice.

Wait for the solution to bubble and brush your teeth with the mixture for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

If you are mixing a strawberry and baking soda solution, leave it on for 2-3 minutes.

Brush it off and rinse thoroughly with water. Do this 2 times a week.

Precaution:

Using such mixtures with fruits like strawberries and lemon enable your teeth to appear whiter on the outside, but according to various studies they are unable to affect the intrinsic colour change of your teeth. In addition, a study conducted in 2015 found found that lemon juice had significant higher erosivity compared to 7 other drinks (which included coca-cola and coca-cola light).

Although these methods work for some people, i would not recommend using these mixtures everyday for teeth whitening.
